DragonLance Tales Volume 3: Love and War

This trilogy surprised me in many ways. First and foremost, I usually don’t care for short stories. But what TSR, and the editors Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman did (Mostly the editors less so TSR) was to pull together a series of stories that fill in the lore of Krynn in ways I didn’t know I wanted until I read it. Some of these stories have been dramatic, some funny, all have been worthwhile. I am not bothered by the format and enjoyed all three books thoroughly.

If you have been following my posts and social media, I first read these books as a teenager, starting when only two books were available. I now have teenagers and am reading them with my kids.

This is how far we have gotten:

The Short stories in this book are briefly (very briefly) surmised below:

A Good Knight’s Tale by Harold Bakst

An ancient Knight of Solamnia tells a scribe a tale of love and how a protective father wanted to shield his daughter by moving her far from where young men could see her.

A Painter’s Vision by Barbara Siegel and Scott Siegel

This is the story of a barmaid who wanted to get a painting just right, finally on her deathbed she achieves perfection. It is a story of grief, recovery and love.

Hunting Destiny by Nick O’Donohoe

If you read the original Chronicles books you are familiar with the story of the White Stag. This is the backstory that helps you understand what was going on there.

Hide and Go Seek by Nancy Varian Berberick

Tasslehoff Burrfoot is taken prisoner. Anyone who knows Kender knows that this is far worse for the jailer’s mental health than it is for the prisoner.

By The Measure by Richard A. Knaack

When will the Knights of Solamnia finally learn that there are grey areas. Pure right and pure wrong almost never is a thing.

The Exiles by Paul B. Thompson and Tonya R. Carter

A very young Sturm Brightblade and his mother are forced to run from danger, something that doesn’t sit well with Sturm.

Heart of Goldmoon by Laura Hickman and Dezra Despain

We learn the backstory of Goldmoon and Riverwind. A must read for fans of the original trilogy.

Raistlin’s Daughter

There is a legend that Raistlin had a daughter. Raistlin meets a strange woman he is captivated by who is raped and the twins come to her rescue. Does she give birth to Raistlin’s child, or someone else’s? Does the power live on?

Silver and Steel by Kevin Randle

Huma’s final battle with the Dark Queen that we have only ever heard about!

From the Yearning for War and the War’s Ending by Michael Williams

An accounting of the siege of Palanthas from the point of view of a young Knight of Solamnia. Another must read for fans to understand the back story.

DragonLance Tales Volume 2: Kender, Gully Dwarves and Gnomes

DragonLance Tales Volume 2: Kender, Gully Dwarves and Gnomes, is a collection of short stories and a Novella by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I want to just give a brief overview of each.

Some of these short stories are absolutely hilarious. There are one or two that greatly expand the Universe of Krynn, one that could easily become its own Trilogy, and one or two that I didn’t really care for completely.

I will give a brief overview of each story/novella, and I will keep my opinion to myself on which ones I didn’t care for that much (hopefully).

Snowsong by Nancy Varian Berberick

A younger, pre War of the Lance Tanis, Sturm, Flint and Tasslehoff are trapped on a snowy mountain. What could possibly go wrong when you have a bored Kender who might at any moment wonder off into a snowstorm and freeze to death! Ok, there is a lot more to this story than that, but it is filled with both comedy and adventure.

The Wizard’s Spectacles by Morris Simon

Glasses of true seeing, allowing anyone to read a magic scroll fall into the hands of someone who probably shouldn’t have them. It isn’t necessarily evil that he does, but he is a bit self serving and not every spell goes exactly the way he wants them to go!

The Storyteller by Barbara Siegel and Scott Siegel

A local storyteller tells a tale that a Dragon Highlord isn’t all that happy about. How do the local people who love the story teller keep him from being put to death! Especially when you have Gnomes and Kender involved.

A Shaggy Dog’s Tail

This one did not end how I thought it would. I was surprised just the twist this story of jealousy, revenge, and magic twists and turns.

Lord Toede’s Disastrous Hunt by Harold Bakst

Lord Toede goes on a hunt, and decides it will be fun to hunt a pair of Kender. You have to be careful, they are pretty sneaky, and fearless. It might or might not be all that simple despite how harmless Kender appear!

Definitions of Honor by Richard A Knaak

A young Knight of Solamnia is hired to help a town with a Minotaur problem. It turns out the problem is much different than he expected and he must question just how one defines honor, and what is and isn’t an honorable solution to the problem.

Hearth Cat and Winter Wren by Nancy  Varian Berberick

The pre-war on the Lance companions come upon a wizard who likes turning people into animals and keeping them in that state. We all know Kender have a short attention span, but what happens when you turn one into a Kender. Can you keep track of it long enough to turn it back?

Wanna Bet? by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

Caramon Majere’s three sons go on adventure of their own and end up in a drinking contest with a dwarf. They don’t necessarily win that contest and end up on an adventure of their own. But let’s face it, who ever really wins a drinking contest?

Into the Heart of the Story

Written as a Gnome records the story of the contributions of the Gnomes to the War of the Lance. They have to have their chance to correct the official record as only a Gnome can.

Dagger Flight by Nick O’Donohoe

This is the story of a dagger, from the perspective of the dagger. The dagger goes through some parts of the story you know if you read the Chronicles Trilogy.

DragonLance Tales Volume 1: The Magic of Krynn

DragonLance Tales Volume 1: The Magic of Krynn, is a collection of short stories and a Novella by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. I want to just give a brief overview of each.

I will say up front, I don’t normally go in for short stories but I really enjoyed how this book filled in some blanks I had from my other reading in the DragonLance World. Krynn makes a little more sense now.

Riverwind and the Crystal Staff by Michael Williams

I liked the way that Williams used the story to explore the culture of the Plainsmen. The Plainsmen are a proud and independent people, and Williams does a good job of bringing their culture to life.

The Blood Sea Monster by Barbara Siegel and Scott Siegel

I liked the way that the Siegels used the character of Duder to explore the theme of fear. Duder is a coward, but he is also a sympathetic character. The reader can relate to his fears, and they can see how he grows as a person as he faces his fears.

A Stone’s Throw Away by Roger E. Moore

I liked the way that Moore captured Tasslehoff’s unique personality. Tasslehoff is a curious, mischievous, and lovable character, and Moore does a good job of bringing him to life.

I also liked the way that the story explored the theme of friendship. The friendship between Tasslehoff and Sturm is one of the most important things in the story, and it is a valuable reminder of the importance of friendship in our lives.

Dreams of Darkness, Dreams of Light by Warren B. Smith

I loved getting to learn more about Pig Faced William. He had a minor role in a different book, and it was nice to learn more.

Love and Ale by Nick O’Donohoe

This story helped us learn a bit about Otik’s brewing process at the Inn of the Last Home, and can be used as a lesson in what not to do.

Wayward Children by Richard A. Knaak

What can I say…Draconians.

The Test of the Twins by Margaret Weis

This was an original ending to a Dragon Magazine article that was originally deemed too dark for publication, but here it is!

Harvests by Nancy Varian Berberick

Another thing that I liked about the story was the way that it showed Anya’s resilience. Anya is a strong and determined woman, and she refuses to give up, even when things seem hopeless. The story shows how Anya’s strength helps her to overcome her challenges, and it ultimately suggests that hope is a powerful force that can help us to overcome even the most difficult obstacles.

Finding the Faith by Mary Kirchoff

I liked the way that Kirchoff captured Laurana’s inner turmoil. Laurana is a complex and sympathetic character, and the reader can see how she grows and develops as the story progresses.

The Legacy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman

The story ends on a hopeful note, and it suggests that grief is a journey, not a destination. This is a message that I think is especially important in today’s world.

This story is amazing, and adds to the Caramon world in large ways. If you liked the first six books, you will love this novella.

DragonLance Legends Vol 3 Test of the Twins

Test of the Twins is the third and final book in the Dragonlance Legends trilogy by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It is a sweeping fantasy epic that follows the twin brothers Caramon and Raistlin Majere as they embark on their specific quests.

The novel begins where the previous book, War of the Twins, left off. Raistlin has opened the Portal to the Abyss and has entered the realm of the Queen of Darkness. Caramon and Tasslehoff have been transported through time, including to the future, where they witness the dire consequences of Raistlin’s quest.

Along the way, they will face many challenges, including the Queen of Darkness herself.

Test of the Twins is a classic fantasy novel that is full of action, adventure, and suspense. It is also a story about family, friendship, and the power of love. If you are a fan of fantasy novels, then you should definitely read Test of the Twins.

Here are some of the reasons why you should read Test of the Twins:

It is a well-written and exciting fantasy novel.

The characters are complex and relatable.

The plot is full of twists and turns.

The setting is rich and detailed.

The themes are timeless and relevant.

If you are looking for a good fantasy novel to read, then I highly recommend Test of the Twins. It is a classic that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

Here are some additional thoughts my kids came up with on why you should read Test of the Twins:

The novel explores the complex relationship between the two brothers, Caramon and Raistlin.

It deals with themes of good versus evil, free will versus destiny, and the power of love.

The novel is full of action, adventure, and suspense.

The writing is clear and engaging.

The characters are well-developed and believable.

If you are a fan of fantasy novels, then you should definitely read Test of the Twins. It is a classic that will stay with you long after you finish reading it.

It is a fantastic ending to the first six books in the DragonLance series.

DragonLance Legends Vol 2 War of the Twins

I, like many parents, have been trying to figure out how to get my kids to spend more time doing something that doesn’t involve the words streaming, or video games. Therefore, this summer I decided to try to read some books with them.

The three kids that live around here, ok here, are 10, 12 and 13 1/2 (I’m told the 1/2 is important). I started reading DragonLance about the age of the two oldest when there were only 2 books on the market.

The two older ones are into it. The 10 year old drifts in and out. (Working on her).

But, so far we have made it through the three books in the Chronicles Trilogy, and have just finished the second in the Legends Trilogy, War of the Twins.

War of the Twins is written by the amazing writing team of Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. It is the second book in the DragonLance Legends trilogy and follows the story of Caramon and Raistlin Majere, two brothers who find themselves caught in the middle of a war between two powerful nations, ok they might be kind of starting this one. In War of the Twins, the brothers must find a way to survive and save the world, and themsleves from destruction. Especially as Raistlin intends to challenge the Dark Queen herself, and take his place amongst the Gods.

This novel is an exciting and captivating read, filled with adventure, fantasy, and a compelling story. It is full of unexpected twists and turns that will keep readers on their toes. The characters are complex and well-developed, and the story is full of suspense and action.

It is at least my third time reading it since it came out in the 1980s, and it never fails to deliver.

So far our summer reading has included the books below. Yes, I now have multiple copies of each thanks to the kids reading in parallel to me!

DragonLance Legends Vol 1 Time of the Twins

DragonLance Legends Volume 1: Time of the Twins is the 4th book ever published in the series, and 1st in this new trilogy, Legends.

  • Time of the Twins is a serious story, but there are also some moments of humor throughout. As an author myself humor matters, it can help to lighten the mood and make the story more enjoyable as well as relatable.
  • The characters in Time of the Twins are all very different, and each one has their own unique personality. Some are well known from the original Chronicles Trilogy, others are not. The authors weave the serious and the humorous to allow all sides of the characters to be known, and they are well developed and even the black robed mage Raistlin is highly relatable.

To me the most humorous thing about this book is that, yes it involved Time Travel which is normally a cheap way to tie up story loose ends, but not in the case. It is so well done that it is enjoyable.

Especially, and probably because the unpredictable Kender, Tasslehoff Burrfoot, accidentally gets sent back in time. What could possibly go wrong sending a Kender back in time?

Well, in order for Raistlin to be fully ready to challenge the Dark Queen, and take his place amongst the Gods he must go back in time to fill in his gaps in knowledge. He must learn things that were lost during the great Cataclysm.

It is a fantastic read, and kicks the new Trilogy off in high gear. Check it out, the book is still in print, even in eBook and audio book formats.

Click here to find it over on Amazon instantly.

I hope you enjoy the book, and join my kids and I on this amazing fantasy journey through Krynn.

DragonLance Chronicles Vol 3 Dragons of Spring Dawning

Great end to the Dragonlance Chronicles trilogy.

When I started reading DragonLance books there were only 2 books on the market. I remember as a teenager having to wait for this release, and hated the wait.

These books are fast paced, epic stories peopled with tons of great fantasy characters and creatures.

The anti-hero/hero depending on your perspective, Raistlin is exceptionally well done. These books give you exactly what you are looking for when you pick them up and are the fantasy equivalent of a popcorn flick.

I am now reading them along with my kids (13, 12, and 10).

These things are such page turners you just can’t stop once you get started. In this one, we see our heroes facing the Dark Queen as she attempts to enter the mortal plane. Can they keep her out and restore balance to the world? Will the dragons stay, or go when the war ends? Will Raistlin turn on his friends, or will he be their savior?

All questions will be answered! Pick up Dragons of Spring Dawning today!

Next up on the reading list? DragonLance Legends Volume 1 – Time of the Twins

DragonLance Chronicles Vol 2 Dragons of Winter Night

This classic novel by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is filled with action, suspense, and a captivating story line that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

One of the main characters in this book is Raistlin Majere, a powerful mage who is determined to become the most powerful wizard in all of Krynn. Raistlin is a complex character who is both a hero and an anti-hero. He is often seen as a villain due to his ambition and ruthlessness, but he is also capable of great compassion and loyalty. Raistlin’s journey to become the most powerful wizard in Krynn is one of the main focuses of the novel and is sure to keep readers engaged.

In addition to Raistlin, the novel also features a wide range of other characters, including the heroic Tanis Half-Elven, the brave Caramon Majere, and the mysterious Kitiara Uth Matar. Each of these characters has their own unique motivations and goals, and their interactions with each other create a captivating story.

DragonLance Chronicles Vol 1 Dragons of Autumn Twilight

I previously did a post with an in depth look at the major characters from Dragons of Autumn Twilight. In this post I want to really get into the story, and world building capabilities of these authors.

DragonLance itself as a Fantasy World now has more than 200 books. This was the first, and I came across it as a teenager in a bookstore when only two books existed in the world of Krynn. At the time fantasy novels existed in a tiny little section of the bookstores and really didn’t have the grip they now have on reader’s attention. I think they offer a great escape from daily life into a land of, mostly, make believe.

It is an exciting and captivating fantasy novel? This classic novel offers an incredible blend of character and world development, making it an unforgettable read.

The story follows the adventures of a group of friends as they embark on a quest to save the world from an evil group of people leading new creatures known as Draconians and bringing evil Dragons back to Krynn to dominate the land.

The characters are incredibly well-developed, with each one having their own unique motivations and personalities. The world of Krynn is also beautifully crafted, with a rich history and culture that will draw you in and keep you engaged, but remains a page-turner while executing the story and world building.

The novel also features intense battles and thrilling action sequences that will keep you on the edge of your seat. With a compelling story and unforgettable characters, Dragons of Autumn Twilight is sure to be an entertaining and satisfying read. So don’t wait any longer – pick up your copy today and get ready for an epic journey!

Dragons of Autumn Twilight can be found on Amazon or any bookstore (click the link). It is even available on audible.

It also has some fantastic artwork at the start of each chapter that does a little foreshadowing of what you are about to read. I think it really adds to the overall readability in ways, and certainly enhances the enjoyment.

I think these authors when they work together are at the top of the genre. You can argue where in the top 5 fantasy authors they belong, but they are in that top 5 of all time.

I have a lot of art from this book, I think I captured something from each chapter, and mine does have the original cover art from way back in the 1980s. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I have.

I have a challenge with my kids that we are going to read all 200+ books in the series, and we will attempt to do a post about each one. So come back! There will be more.

DragonLance – Chronicles Volume I Dragons of Autumn Twilight

Dragons of Autumn Twilight, the first book in the DragonLance series, is an absolute must-read for fantasy fans! Not only does it have dragons, but it also has magic, adventure, and a whole bunch of other mythical creatures. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be an expert in fantasy to enjoy it. The characters are so well-developed, and story so fast paced, that even if you’re not a fan of the genre, you’ll still be able to follow along. So, if you’re looking for a fun, lighthearted read, look no further than Dragons of Autumn Twilight!

Now, the cast of characters is really important. The authors craft the universe of DragonLance through their eyes. The main characters from this first, must read book of the series are all given some time below. Please enjoy this book, it is amazing.

When I think of Tanis Half-Elven from Dragons of Autumn Twilight, I think of a brave and heroic character who is always willing to put himself in harm’s way for the benefit of others. But there is much more to Tanis than meets the eye.

At his core, Tanis is a complex and thoughtful character, struggling to find his place in the world. Tanis is a half-elf, a product of both human and elven heritage. This dual identity has made it difficult for him to truly feel at home in either world. He is often caught between two cultures, unable to fully embrace either one. This struggle is a major theme in Tanis’ life and one that he must confront throughout the series.

Tanis is also a deeply reflective character. He is constantly questioning his decisions and motivations, trying to make sense of the world around him. This introspection often leads him to make difficult choices. Overall, Tanis Half-Elven is an incredibly complex character who is constantly struggling to find his place in the world.

Sturm Brightblade is probably one of the most beloved characters from the early Dragonlance saga. He is a loyal and noble knight who strives to protect those he loves and serves. He is a strong, brave, and honorable knight who puts his own life on the line to protect the innocent.

He is a true hero, willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Sturm is a knight of the Solamnic Order, a knightly order dedicated to protecting the people of Krynn. He is a very skilled fighter, having been trained in the arts of swordsmanship and mounted combat. He is also a skilled leader and diplomat, able to negotiate and mediate disputes between different factions.

He is a real beacon of light in the darkness, and his courage and determination inspire those around him. He is willing to stand up for what is right, even when it means risking his own life. He is also loyal to his friends and comrades, willing to do whatever it takes to protect them. He is a reminder that we can all be heroes, no matter our circumstances.

Goldmoon is a heartwarming and caring figure. She is a strong-willed and compassionate woman who is determined to help those around her. She is a leader, a healer, and a source of hope for her people. Goldmoon is a symbol of courage and strength, and her unwavering faith in the gods guides her throughout her journey.

Her courage and strength are what ultimately lead her to the powerful Blue Crystal Staff, a magical artifact that can heal and protect her people. Goldmoon’s actions are always motivated by her love for her people, and her willingness to help them. She is a shining example of what it means to be selfless and caring, and her story is an inspiration to us all.

Riverwind is a Plainsman, a nomadic people who live on the plains of Abanasinia. Riverwind is brave and loyal, and is in love with the main character, Goldmoon. He is a skilled hunter and tracker. He is a wise and thoughtful leader, and is respected by the other members of the party.

He is a powerful warrior, and is able to stand up to the might of any foe. He is a beloved character in the series, and his courage and loyalty are a major part of the story.

Raistlin Majere is one of the most iconic characters from the Dragonlance series, and in my opinion all of the fantasy genre. He is a powerful mage who is determined to gain even more power and knowledge.

He is a complex character who has a dark side, but also a good side. Raistlin is willing to do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, and his ambition often leads him to make difficult decisions. He is a powerful and dangerous character who is not to be taken lightly. Raistlin is a master of magic and a formidable foe. He is a powerful force in the world of Dragonlance and his presence is felt throughout the world. Raistlin is a character that will stay with readers for years to come.

Caramon is a strong-willed individual who is not afraid to stand up for what he believes in. He is an expert swordsman and is a master of the magical arts. Caramon is a loyal and devoted friend who is willing to risk his own life to protect those he loves, especially his brother Raistlin above all others. He is a powerful force for good in the world and is an inspiring example of courage and perseverance.

Flint Fireforge is a dwarf from the mountain kingdom of Thorbardin, and is a master smith. He is known for his smithing skills. Flint is a loyal friend, and often helps them out in times of need. He is also a fierce warrior, and is willing to fight for what he believes in. Flint has a strong sense of justice, and will go to great lengths to protect those he cares about. Despite his complains he is very fond of Tasslehoff Burrfoot.

Tasslehoff Burrfoot is the epitome of adventurous spirit. He’s always ready for a new adventure, and he’s never one to shy away from a bit of trouble. He’s the kind of character who will do whatever it takes to get the job done – no matter how risky it might be. He’s also known for his love of pranks, and his mischievous nature often gets him into trouble. But no matter what, he always comes out on top. So, if you’re looking for a bit of excitement, look no further than Tasslehoff Burrfoot, but be sure to check his pockets before he leaves your house!
